Science Curriculum

*NEW Electronics (2017)

Electronics are connected to us in many aspects of our life. The devices we use, such as the handphones, computers, escalators and even the traffic lights, are examples of electronics applied in daily living. Yuhuans can gain an early headstart to learning about electronics that lie behind some of the advances in technology today.

Secondary 3 Express course students may choose to offer Electronics elective at ‘O’ levels to acquire knowledge about the fundamentals of electronics and appreciate the usefulness of electronics and the impact on modern society.

Lower Secondary Science

Lower Sec Science provides a foundation in science for students to prepare them for the more demanding subjects of biology, chemistry and physics offered in upper secondary. We aim to engage students in Science-related issues that concern their lives, the society and the environment and equip them with process skills like posing questions, formulating hypothesis, defining the problem, generating possibilities and predicting outcomes.  These will help students to be able to communicate effectively, engage in creative problem solving, plan meaningful investigations and make informed decisions.

Upper Secondary Science

The school offers studies in all three sciences- Biology, Chemistry and Physics. They may be pursued as Pure Science subjects by students who have a flair for science, or as a combination of two in a Combined Science subject. The sciences prepare students for post-secondary education courses in Junior Colleges, Polytechnics and ITEs. The syllabi aim to provide a great educational experience for all, enabling students to acquire sufficient understanding and knowledge to become confident citizens in a technological world, and to be able to take or develop an informed interest in matters of scientific importance, recognise the usefulness, and limitations, of the scientific method and to appreciate its applicability in other disciplines and in everyday life. We strive to stimulate our students’ interest and care for the environment. The use of our green data based questions help hone students’ creative thinking and problem solving skills. Students will learn to analyse, formulate and solve different types of scientific problems. They will also learn to work with data and use data logger in their work.

Department Flagship Programme

Math-nifi-Science Week 2017

iSEE (Scientific Experiential & Exploratory) Learning Programme

Objectives: The iSEE learning programme is Science Department's flagship programme. It seeks to enable students to view the pursuit of Science as meaningful and useful and to nurture the student as an inquirer to explore their natural and physical world.

The iSEE programme is explicitly linked to various parts of the Science curriculum. The iSEE learning programme will cover 3 fields in Science, namely, (i) biodiversity, (ii) chemistry and our environment, and (iii) the physical world around us. Each module will provide students with learning experiences, exploratory and explanatory opportunities and extension of their learning to new contexts.

For more information on the iSEE flagship programme, please click here.

Learning Journey to the Lee Kong Chian Natural History Museum (as part of iSEE Biology Module)

Objectives: To nurture students’ interest in biodiversity and associated environmental issues. This learning journey also aims to advocate the adoption of scientific values and attitudes such as curiosity, objectivity, integrity, perseverance and responsibility.

Sec 1 Students LJ to LCKNHM (2).jpeg

Through a customised learning trail facilitated by Science teachers, students explored the origin of life and all major branches of the Tree of Life, and learnt about biodiversity and history of life on Earth through examining rare fossil collections of extinct organisms.

Math-nifi-Science Week

Objectives: The integrated Maths and Science week, titled “Math-nifi-Science”, was held from 18 July to 22 July 2016. It aimed to:

  • arouse students’ learning interest through heightening students’ awareness of the interconnectedness of Mathematical and Scientific concepts.
  • provide students with the opportunities to apply Maths and Science concepts in real-world contexts.
  • deepen students’ mastery of fundamental mathematical and scientific skills to support the Maths and Science curriculum.

ABC Water Trail 2016 (3).JPGScience Fringe Activity at MathnifiScience week.jpg

A variety of fun and enriching activities were conducted for each level. These included the ABC Water Trail @ Yishun Pond, Electronics Application Workshop @ Ngee Ann Polytechnic, and Sec 3 Mass Escape Game. Hands-on Fringe Activities, Special Science Demonstrations, and Science Quizzes were also conducted during Recess time to allow students to try out fun experiments.

Yuhua Green and Environment Programme

Yuhua Secondary School has embarked on the green and environment programme that has since involved the whole school. Through our concerted effort, we are honoured to achieve Green Audit Lotus Sustained Achievement Award (SAA) (recertification), 3R Competition Gold, Green Schools @ South West CDC Gold as well as EcoSchools Bronze Award.

We believe that values are best internalised if they are meaningfully practised and understood. Apart from educating the students on the green and environment issues, a series of activities are also set in place for students to get involved actively. The activities aim to deepen students’ level of care and concern for the environment and ultimately develop the students into responsible citizens. The activities include on-going recycling at school, energy conservation, litter-free environment, waste composting, water trails, plants growing in used bottles, care for trees, assembly talks and Return Your Tray Campaign.

Students-led activities are our emphasis. As much as possible, students are placed in charge of various activities such as the recycling corner in the school as well as in their classrooms. Competitions such as green poems, poster design and class notice board design are also organised to sustain students’ interest in the green effort. Events such as Earth Day, Earth Hour and Greenwave provide platforms for students to translate values into actions.

The science teachers are involved in the training of a group of student leaders known as Junior Environment Ambassadors (JEAs) and provide guidance to them to assume leadership roles in driving the green activities. Criteria for selecting JEAs are leadership, responsibility, caring and a love for the environment. JEAs are the champions in environment education and help to promote the relevant values.

JEAs are also tasked as Dengue Mobsters in the Outreach Programme for Anti-Dengue Awareness. They visit HDB units and to educate the residents on the consequences of breeding mosquitoes and the effects of dengue fever. JEAs are also involved in a roadshow in the neighbourhood to educate the public on the adverse effects of littering. Such events help to instil leadership in the JEAs and develop their potential in public speaking.

F1 in Schools Challenge

Yuhua Secondary School ‘Team YHVeloce’ participated in the F1 in Schools The Singapore Challenge 2013 (Bloodhound SSC Novice Category) held at Ngee Ann Polytechnic Convention Centre from 23 rd to 24 th July.  Team YHVeloce has done the school proud by clinching the Overall Champion, Best Booth and Portfolio and Gold Award in the Bloodhound SSC Novice Category.

F1 in Schools is a multi-disciplinary challenge open to all Primary and Secondary schools, Junior Colleges, Institutes of High Learning and other organised youth groups where teams of students aged 9 to 19 deploy CAD/CAM software to collaborate, design, analyse, manufacture, test, and then race miniature compressed air powered balsa wood F1 cars. The team are judged on car speed, as well as supporting evidence on their design, verbal presentation and marketing display stand in ‘’the pits”.

Green Wave

On 22 May 2013, our school planted sea teak trees to celebrate Green Wave 2013, a global campaign to educate youth about nature and biodiversity. This year, the event takes on a special meaning as 2013 marks 50 years of greening Singapore. National Parks Board (NParks) has lined up many exciting activities suitable for everyone, such as ‘Playsets of Yesteryears’ and ‘1963 Commemorative Tree Planting’. Find out more and how you can take part in the various activities here:  https://www.nparks.gov.sg/50years

Innovation Design Challenge
Innovation Design Challenge is a competition organised by Republic Polytechnic, School of Engineering, Diploma in Engineering Design with Business and sponsored by Pixel Labs of Info-Communications Media Development Authority of Singapore. It presents a real-world problem which needs a practical solution from participating teams. Student teams are required to design and build a model prototype within certain constraints, and to produce a video to pitch their solution. It exposes students to engineering, design and business, and encourages entrepreneurial mind-set in students.
